Material guide
If you are comparing removable wallpaper, the face pattern is only part of the decision. The material behind the print matters too. Canvas & Ivy's residential Peel & Stick, Pre-Pasted, and Traditional wallpapers are PVC-free, and our Peel & Stick deserves special attention because many self-adhesive wallcoverings on the market are vinyl.
What does PVC-free wallpaper mean?
PVC stands for polyvinyl chloride, a plastic commonly used to make vinyl wallcoverings. “PVC-free” is a specific material statement: the residential wallpaper substrate does not contain polyvinyl chloride. It is more precise than a broad label such as “green” or “eco-friendly,” which can mean different things from one brand to another.
A PVC-free claim does not mean that a product is impact-free, biodegradable, or suitable for every wall. It simply gives you a clear fact you can use when material composition is important to your project. For a complete view, also consider the ink system, adhesive, manufacturing location, expected lifespan, and whether the wallpaper is made only when ordered.
Why Peel & Stick deserves a closer look
Peel-and-stick wallpaper is often described as “removable wallpaper,” but that phrase tells you how it installs—not what it is made from. Many self-adhesive products use a vinyl face, and vinyl is commonly PVC. Thickness or weight alone does not identify the material, so the most useful question to ask is direct: Is this peel-and-stick wallpaper PVC-free?
Canvas & Ivy answers that question clearly. Our residential Peel & Stick wallpaper is PVC-free and printed with zero-VOC, solvent-free inks. The adhesive is an acrylic microsphere system designed to make installation straightforward while allowing careful repositioning on a properly prepared wall.
How our three residential wallpaper materials compare
| Material | PVC-free? | How it installs | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Peel & Stick | Yes | Peel the liner, place on a smooth wall, and reposition as needed. | DIY projects, rentals, and smooth surfaces. |
| Pre-Pasted | Yes | Activate the adhesive with water, then slide into position. | First-time installers who want a lasting paper-like finish. |
| Traditional | Yes | Apply paste to the wall, then hang the dry panel. | Permanent projects, large rooms, and professional installation. |
Our heavyweight Type II Commercial Vinyl, available separately through the Trade Program, is not part of the PVC-free residential line.
What makes Canvas & Ivy Peel & Stick different?
1. A PVC-free residential substrate
You do not have to choose a traditional paste-the-wall product to avoid PVC. Our self-adhesive option gives you the convenience of Peel & Stick on a PVC-free material.
2. Acrylic microsphere adhesive
The pressure-sensitive acrylic microspheres promote reliable adhesion across nearly all smooth wall surfaces. During installation, you can lift and reposition a panel as needed instead of committing the moment it first touches the wall.
3. Zero-VOC, solvent-free printing
Our residential wallpapers are printed with non-toxic, zero-VOC inks that contain no ink solvents. That material fact sits alongside the PVC-free substrate rather than being used as a vague substitute for it.
4. Made to order in the USA
Every residential wallpaper order is printed for the customer's project in our Northwest Arkansas facility on American-made paper. Made-to-order production helps us avoid warehousing large runs of preprinted wallpaper that may never be used.
Wall preparation still matters
PVC-free Peel & Stick is easy to install, but no self-adhesive wallpaper can compensate for a wall that is dusty, textured, damp, oily, or covered in uncured paint. For the best result, start with smooth, clean drywall finished with at least two coats of paint and allow fresh paint to cure for 30 days. Order a sample first and test it on the actual wall.
- Best surfaces: smooth painted drywall, glass, smooth tile, and laminate.
- Avoid: textured walls, raw drywall, dusty surfaces, active moisture, and newly painted walls.
- Test first: paint, preparation, climate, and wall condition all affect adhesion and removal.
Questions shoppers ask about PVC-free wallpaper
Is all Canvas & Ivy wallpaper PVC-free?
All Canvas & Ivy residential wallpaper materials—Peel & Stick, Pre-Pasted, and Traditional—are PVC-free. The separate Type II Commercial Vinyl offered through our Trade Program is a different commercial material and is not included in that claim.
Is PVC-free Peel & Stick the same as paper wallpaper?
Not necessarily. “PVC-free” identifies what the material does not contain; it does not by itself identify the entire material construction. Use the product specification and a physical sample to judge feel, finish, flexibility, and installation behavior.
Does PVC-free mean removable?
No. Material composition and removability are separate questions. Our Peel & Stick uses repositionable acrylic microsphere adhesive, but results depend on the paint, cure time, wall preparation, texture, humidity, and length of installation. Test a sample on your wall before ordering rolls.
Does PVC-free wallpaper look less premium?
It should not. Canvas & Ivy residential wallpapers have a controlled, low-luster surface designed to avoid the plastic gloss associated with some vinyl wallcoverings. Order the same design in multiple materials if you want to compare the finish in your room's light.
Choose the material that fits your wall
Start with a sample so you can evaluate the printed color, surface, and adhesion on the wall where the wallpaper will actually be installed.
