How to Choose the Right Wallpaper Material

Choosing between traditional, pre-pasted, and peel-and-stick wallpaper comes down to three things: how you want to install it, how long you want it to last, and what kind of walls you have. All three materials deliver the same high-resolution prints on premium stock — the difference is in the backing and adhesive system.

Traditional wallpaper (also called paste-the-wall or non-woven wallpaper) uses a separate adhesive applied directly to the wall. This gives you the most control during installation and produces the most durable, professional-looking finish. It's the material most professional wallpaper installers prefer because it doesn't expand or contract when wet, and it lays perfectly flat against the wall with minimal bubbling.

Pre-pasted wallpaper has a water-activated adhesive already applied to the back. You dip each panel in water (or spray it), then hang it while wet. There's no need to buy separate paste, which makes setup cleaner and faster. Pre-pasted wallpaper is an excellent choice for first-time DIY installers who want a permanent result without the learning curve of working with wet paste.

Peel-and-stick wallpaper works exactly like a large sticker. You peel the backing and press it to the wall. It's repositionable and removes without damaging the wall surface, which makes it popular with renters and anyone who likes to change their décor frequently. The tradeoff is that peel-and-stick requires very smooth walls to adhere properly — any texture, dust, or fresh paint can cause lifting and bubbling over time.

Traditional vs Pre-Pasted vs Peel and Stick: Which Wallpaper Is Best?

The best wallpaper material depends on your situation. For homeowners doing a permanent installation on smooth or lightly textured drywall, traditional wallpaper delivers the best results. The paste-the-wall method gives you roughly 10 minutes of repositioning time, produces invisible seams when installed correctly, and creates a finish that looks and feels like the wall itself — not something stuck on top of it.

For DIY installers who want something easier than traditional but more permanent than peel-and-stick, pre-pasted wallpaper is the sweet spot. The adhesive is already on the paper, so you just activate it with water. No paste bucket, no tray, no mess. Pre-pasted wallpaper bonds strongly to primed or painted drywall and holds up well in bedrooms, living rooms, and dining rooms.

Peel-and-stick wallpaper is best for temporary installations, rental apartments, accent walls you plan to change seasonally, or spaces where you want the option to remove the wallpaper without any wall repair. It works beautifully on smooth surfaces like glass, smooth tile, and well-finished drywall. It's not recommended for textured walls, walls painted within the last 30 days, or high-humidity environments like bathrooms.

What Walls Work Best for Each Material?

All three wallpaper materials perform best on smooth, clean, dry surfaces. The key differences come down to texture tolerance and surface preparation requirements.

Traditional wallpaper is the most forgiving. The wet paste fills minor surface imperfections and the non-woven backing conforms to light orange-peel texture. It works on painted drywall, primed surfaces, and even lightly textured walls. For best results, apply a wallpaper primer 24 hours before installation.

Pre-pasted wallpaper needs smooth painted or primed drywall. The water-activated adhesive doesn't fill texture as well as wet paste, so any bumps or ridges may telegraph through the paper. Avoid applying pre-pasted wallpaper to raw (unprimed) drywall, as the paper fibers can bond too aggressively to bare gypsum.

Peel-and-stick wallpaper is the most surface-sensitive. It adheres through pressure-sensitive contact, which means any texture, dust, or oils on the wall surface will reduce adhesion. Smooth drywall with at least two coats of paint (cured for 30+ days) gives the best results. Peel-and-stick also works well on glass, smooth tile, and laminate surfaces.

Wallpaper Pricing: Samples, Panels, and Rolls

At Canvas & Ivy, every pattern is available in all three materials at the same price point. Samples start at $9 for a 9″ × 13″ printed-to-scale swatch that shows you exactly how the pattern, color, and texture will look in your space. Single rolls (24″ × 13 ft, covering approximately 26 sq ft) start at $89, and double rolls (24″ × 27 ft, covering approximately 54 sq ft) start at $159.

We recommend ordering samples before committing to rolls. Colors can look dramatically different depending on your lighting, wall color, and the other finishes in the room. A $9 sample can save you from a $300 mistake.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use peel-and-stick wallpaper in a bathroom?

We don't recommend it. High humidity causes the pressure-sensitive adhesive to weaken over time, leading to peeling and bubbling. For bathrooms, traditional wallpaper with a proper primer and paste is the most durable option.

Is traditional wallpaper hard to remove?

Modern non-woven traditional wallpaper (like ours) is designed to strip cleanly in full sheets when you're ready to remove it. Score the surface, apply warm water or a wallpaper removal solution, wait 10–15 minutes, and peel. It's significantly easier to remove than the vinyl wallpapers of the 1990s.

Do all three materials look the same once installed?

The print quality and color are identical across all three materials — we use the same printers, inks, and resolution for every substrate. The subtle difference is in the surface texture: traditional and pre-pasted have a soft matte finish, while peel-and-stick has a very slight sheen that's only noticeable in direct light.

How much wallpaper do I need?

Use our wallpaper calculator to get an instant estimate based on your wall dimensions. We recommend adding 20% overage for pattern matching and trimming. It's always better to have an extra roll than to run short mid-install.

Can I install wallpaper over existing wallpaper?

We don't recommend it. For the best adhesion and smoothest finish, remove any existing wallpaper, repair the wall surface, prime, and let it cure before installing new wallpaper. Layering wallpaper can cause bubbling, peeling, and uneven surfaces.

How long does shipping take?

Every order is printed fresh in 3–5 business days. Free shipping adds 7–12 calendar days after production. Expedited shipping ($19.99) adds 3–5 business days after production. Samples typically arrive faster since they ship in flat mailers.
