A loose, hand-painted checkerboard built from imperfect squares in burnt sienna, brick red, tangerine, blush, putty cream, charcoal, and warm taupe. The grid is intentionally wobbly — squares vary in width and height, edges break and reform, and adjacent blocks shift slightly so no two rows align perfectly. The painted color inside each square is itself irregular, with visible directional brushwork running vertically through some blocks and horizontally through others, and small areas where the underlying paper shows through in pale streaks.
The palette is unmistakably North African through a contemporary lens — sun-baked oranges and rust dominate, charcoal anchors a few key squares, and creamy putty provides the breathing room that prevents the warm tones from going monolithic. Nothing reads as a perfect color block; each square has tonal variation across its face, almost as if painted with diluted pigment that pooled and dried unevenly. The result is something closer to a small painted study than a manufactured pattern.
This paper performs in rooms that want warmth and informality together. A breakfast nook with rush-seat chairs, a small home office with a leather chair and brass desk lamp, a guest bath with a stone vessel sink, a child's room aiming for grown-up character. Pair it with limewashed oak, terracotta floor tile, woven jute, and ceramics in matte earthenware glazes. The orange-dominant palette ensures the room reads warm in any light condition; the charcoal squares provide enough contrast to anchor against modern furnishings. Avoid pairing with traditional florals — this paper wants company that respects its handmade origin.
